Session Details

Morning – 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM (with Nick) – ages 5-8

Flappy Bird Workshop Using “Scratch”

Related Class: Scratch Foundations

In this session, younger students will use Scratch, the block-based coding language developed for kids by MIT, to recreate the Flappy Bird game. This beginner-friendly session will introduce kids to key coding concepts like variables, clones, and collision detection—essential building blocks of game development!

What Your Child Will Learn:

  • Variables: Use variables to keep track of the bird’s height and the game score.
  • Clones: Learn how to make the pipes in the game move and create new obstacles using Scratch’s clone feature.
  • Creative Sprite Design: Draw your own Flappy Bird and customize the game’s obstacles for a personal touch!

Afternoon – 12:30pm to 3:00pm (with Nick) – ages 9-12

Flappy Bird Workshop Using “Godot”

Related Class: Python Foundations

The afternoon session is designed for beginner to intermediate students who are open to trying more challenging coding concepts. Here, students will recreate Flappy Bird with Godot, a powerful game engine that uses GDScript – a coding language very similar to Python. This session introduces important coding concepts like variables, instantiating objects, and signals to build a fun and polished game.

What Your Child Will Learn:

  • Variables: Track and update the bird’s position, score, and the game state with variables.
  • Signals: Use signals to trigger events in the game, such as when the bird collides with an obstacle or when a score is updated.
  • Python-like Coding with GDScript: Get comfortable with Python syntax, which is highly similar to GDScript, the language used in Godot, and gain skills that are transferable to real-world coding.

Sample Project Output

Ages 5-8: A simple version of Flappy Bird where players control the bird to avoid pipes, track their score, and watch out for collisions.

Ages 9-12: A more polished version of the game with moving obstacles, scoring, and event-driven actions, all created using Godot and Python-like code!
