1-Day Coding Class: March (3/23)

Celebrate the beauty of spring by learning how to code your very own cherry blossom-catching game using Scratch block coding, developed by MIT!

Join our March 23rd 1-day Coding Class and code your own “Cherry Blossom Catcher” game. In this game, students design their own character that catches falling cherry blossom petals. Whether you’re a first-time coder or have some experience, this event is perfect for kids who want to dive into the world of coding in a fun and creative way.

Overview

Date: Sunday, March 23

  • Morning Session: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Afternoon Session: 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM

Location: Tokyo Coding Club Nishi-Azabu, 6th Floor 

Capacity: Maximum 10 students per class

Cost: FREE for first-time attendees! Returning students: ¥5,000 (+10% tax).

Each session includes 2 hours of small group, instructor-led coding lessons and 30 minutes for students to present their projects to family and friends!

  • 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM (ages 9-12) – Making Coral Tools with Minecraft Datapacks

Cherry Blossom Catcher Workshop (Morning)

The morning session is a perfect introduction for beginner coders and will inspire creativity, logical thinking and game design.

What Your Child Will Learn:

  • Clone Blocks: Create and control multiple falling cherry blossom petals using Scratch’s clone feature.
  • Simple Game Mechanics: Learn how to set up basic controls to catch the falling petals and score points.
  • Creative Sprite Design: Draw your own cherry blossom petals and design the characters in the game!

Afternoon – 12:30pm to 3:00pm (with Nick) – ages 9-12

Cherry Blossom Catcher Workshop (Afternoon)

The afternoon session is great for beginner to intermediate students and will push them to explore more advanced concepts than the morning session, while also developing their problem-solving skills.

What Your Child Will Learn:

  • Variables: Track and display the score as players catch the cherry blossoms petals.
  • Join Blocks: Combine text and variables together to create a more interconnected game.
  • Animate with Code: Animate features like rotation and catching using logic to make the game more immersive and enjoyable!
  • Problem-Solving: Tackle coding challenges while creatively building out the gameplay experience.

Sample Project Output

  • Ages 5-8: A simple game where players catch falling cherry blossoms that they have drawn before they hit the ground.
  • Ages 9-12: A more polished version of the game, including an improved scoring system, animations, and more varied gameplay.
